neuer teil der good times dj-mix-serie von norman jay. die good times goes east partys in der st john church im londoner stadteil hackney sind eine institution der club-kultur der britischen hauptstadt. norman jay, lange teil der talkin loud-familie, ist seit den 80er jahren als dj tätig und dafür bekannt in seinen sets einen genre-übergreifenden mix zu realisieren. so ist *good times - skank & boogie* musikalisch entsprechend weit gefächert: von laurel aitken über deodato bis hin zu paul johnson reicht der bogen. ska, house und exotischer pop treffen schlüssig aufeinander. jay, der auch bei der bbc eine radiosendung unterhält, wurde inzwischen mit dem orden mbe (the most excellent order of the british empire) für seine besonderen verdienste um die musik-kultur ausgezeichnet und wird in seiner heimat liebevoll als godfather of club culture bezeichnet. das vinyl erscheint als 2lp (180g) + mp3 und beinhaltet einen bonus track (baby washington - think about the good times).

prolific doesn’t begin to describe japan’s keita sano, who has come seemingly out of nowhere to become one of the most unique new voices in electronic music thanks to a wildly eclectic clutch of releases for much-hyped labels like 1080p, joakim’s crowdspacer, mister saturday night, spring theory, discos capablanca and more. building on that buzz, sano is unleashing still more head-twisting takes on house and techno via new york’s most excellent unlimited. label boss paul raffaele has found a kindred spirit in sano. their shared love of classic dance music and refusal to let genre or convention define their work makes mxu a natural home for the “sunset ep,” coming as it does on the heels of the category-smashing “oyama edit” 12” and a 7” of drum track edits by disco king danny krivit.

bc & co. started out as a small group of friends who surfed and skateboarded together. as they hung out in venice and shared their interests and ideas about music, sounds started to take shape. what started off with no intentions of being anything serious began to develop, inspiring music composer alberto bof, music advisor paul t. and music coordinator alex olson to think about avenues of release. inspired by a seigen ono record put out for comme des garcons in 1988 olson got the idea to release the trio s project under his brand bianca chandon. this limited 12 inch has embodied the spirit of the creators and the motivation of the brand to become bianca s first record release.

poker flat continue their welcome foray into vinyl only releases, following kindimmers fine wax substance ep - with four deep morsels from pavel iudin (or paul yudin, as hes occasionally known in anglophone circles.) now respected resident at st. petersburgs stackenschneider club, iudin has developed a real feel for deep, dubby dancefloor-oriented tech house.

it’s now pretty obvious that disco influence has not only been powerful in western clubs. it has also influenced musicians all around the world, and west-indies islands are no exception to the rule. indeed, at that time in the caribbean territories, local musicians and producers seized the sound of their us counterparts, and make it their own, melting-up disco, funk, and boogie (even early rap) elements with some more traditional or local styles. apart from some obvious titles which made it to the charts, very few was known on these productions until recently. from an initial pre-selection of 40 tracks, favorite recordings and waxist teamed up to narrow down the actual tracklist. with no pretention to be exhaustive, this selection represents a tiny sample of a broader ocean of quality caribbean disco/boogie tunes. favorite recordings & waxist are very happy and proud to bring back lights on some of these rare tunes.

the next release on paul rip s specimen records is by god of the machine, the brainchild of deep house and techno maestro, derrick thompson a.k.a. drivetrain. the ep kicks of with the original, a powerful slice of jackin tribal techno, its bleeps, tones and chants sitting atop a tight percussive groove that s infectious from the first beat to the last drop. next up comes hijacker s electro workout. its beats are old school yet the attitude is set firmly in the future with its square wave bass line, trippy noises and swooping scikfi pads. santonio echols takes it back to detroit with a simple yet driving tech house rendition containing sublime melodic chords, eerie pads and a hypnotic pad stab that sends tingles up your spine. mr.c finishes with one of his typically infectious acid workouts, where he adds a cheeky bassline, haunting pads and cowbell pings to blend and morph into the twisted effects of a psychoactive substance.
